Stanford University has announced that the court inside Maples Pavilion will now be named Tara VanDerveer Court in honor of the Hall of Fame coach who retired in April. VanDerveer, who is considered the winningest coach in college basketball, will be celebrated at a home game in November with an unveiling ceremony.
In recognition of her remarkable coaching career, the 70-year-old VanDerveer will also have her name associated with one of the assistant coaching positions. The newly established 'The Tara VanDerveer Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach' position was made possible by a generous gift from Stanford supporters Tashia and John Morgridge.
VanDerveer concluded her tenure with the Cardinal on Wednesday, leaving behind a legacy of 1,216 career victories accumulated over 45 years at various institutions including Idaho, Ohio State, and Stanford. During her time at Stanford, VanDerveer led the women's basketball team to NCAA titles in 1990, 1992, and most recently in 2021. Her teams also made it to the Final Four an impressive 14 times.
This recognition of VanDerveer's contributions to the sport of basketball highlights her exceptional coaching abilities and the profound impact she has had on the Stanford University community and women's college basketball as a whole.
