Rory McIlroy ready to play PGA Championship despite divorce proceedings

Rory McIlroy has declared himself ready to play despite the breakdown of his marriage in the lead-up to the PGA Championship.

McIlroy filed for divorce from his wife Erica after seven years of marriage in the lead-up to the last major he won back in 2014.

The 35-year-old said he would not answer questions about his private life ahead of his pre-tournament press conference on Thursday but, when asked about his state of mind, he said: “I’m ready to play this week.”

The impending divorce has overshadowed his return to Valhalla where he won the fourth and last of his major titles all the way back in 2014.

His form has been excellent in the build-up with winning in New Orleans and then Quail Hollow on Sunday before travelling to Valhalla.

Going into the PGA, which gets under way on Thursday, the Northern Irishman said: “Today was the first time I was on the golf course since 10 years ago so it was good to refamiliarise myself with the place. It’s a little longer, a couple of minor changes but, for the most part, pretty much the same that I can remember.

“The game feels good coming off a fun win in New Orleans… and then a really good performance last week. It’s all about confidence and momentum, and I have a lot of confidence and quite a bit of momentum coming into this week. It’s just about trying to keep that momentum going.”
