Revenue at Smyths Toys soars past €1bn for first time as parents make Christmas rush

Revenues at the Galway headquartered Smyths Toys across Ireland and the UK passed the €1bn mark for the first time last year.

In a record year for the business, combined revenues at the Republic of Ireland, UK and Northern Ireland units last year totalled €1.17bn.

New accounts for the business’s Irish unit, Smyths Toys Ltd show that its pre-tax profits last year increased by 39pc to €4.3m.

This followed revenues increasing by 3.45pc from €210m to €217m.

The business operates 21 stores here showing that the average revenues per store for the year were €10.3m.

The €217m revenues across the Republic is in addition to the revenues of £838.7m (€973.7m) generated by its UK and Northern Ireland units last year.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the manager of a Smyths Toys outlet in Dublin revealed the most popular toys that are flying off the shelves this Christmas.

Speaking exclusively to Dublin Live, Stephen Timlyn - who runs the Carrickmines branch of the toy retailer - says one of the popular items sold in Smyths is the innovative Mama Surprise toy. This unusual playset consists of a fake guinea pig, which grows and produces its own babies over time, retailing at €79.99.

Stephen told Dublin Live: “Toys like Mama Surprise are often one offs that can’t be used after they hatch, but with this you can keep using the toy again and again to create more guinea pigs. That’s one of the leading ones at the moment, it’s right up there.”

Ziggy the Robot Dog is another animal toy adored by children in store. This toy is priced at €49.99.
