Rainfall expected over many parts of India till May 16: IMD

New Delhi: East, Central, South Peninsular, and Northwest India are expected to witness rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds for the next three to four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

A fresh spell of heat wave is likely to commence over northwest India from May 16, the IMD said.

According to the weather department, fairly widespread to scattered light rainfall is also very likely over Northwest India for the next three to four days.

“Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and winds gusting up to 50 kmph is very likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on May 12, 2024, and a reduction thereafter with isolated activity on May 13 and 14, 2024,” the IMD said.

“Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) likely over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh on 12th and

over Rajasthan during May 12–16, 2024.

Strong surface winds up to 40 kmph are also very likely to prevail over the plains of Uttar Pradesh and south Rajasthan during the next 2 days, the IMD said.

The weather department further forecasts, “Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning, and squally winds (40–50 kmph) over Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat region on 12th and 13th and isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning, and squally winds (40–60 kmph) over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the next 5 days.”

“Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand are also expected to witness fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning and squally winds (40–50 kmph) from May 12 to 16,” according to the MeT department.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Lakshadweep are also expected to witness similar weather conditions until May 16th.

“Fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds (30–40 kmph) is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.

Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during May 12–15 and likely to increase to fairly widespread rainfall during May 16–18,” the IMD said.

On hot and humid weather, the IMD said that these conditions are very likely to prevail over Saurashtra and Kutch during the next 5 days.

Heatwave conditions are likely over West Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, and South Haryana on May 16th, it added. (UNI)
