Nick Cave: I can express myself better with sculpture than song

Londoner’s Diary

Singer Nick Cave is reinventing himself as an artist, saying that often he can better express himself through visual art than music now.

“What started off as pure whimsy ended up speaking to me about things that my songs haven’t been able to,” he told artnet. The Bad Seeds singer has his first solo art show in Brussels, which features ceramic figurines of the Devil.

Cave went to art school but his musical success got in the way. “The band just kind of took off but my art career didn’t because I was preoccupied… this idea that you can knock out some paintings between tours felt like a kind of a vanity. That’s why I wanted to make craft things,” he said.

Cave got into making ceramics in lockdown, which he described as “the most extraordinary time”.

Hall of Fame

Commiserations Susan Hall. She may not be mayor but, as Tory candidate, she provided great copy for this diary column. First there were her tweets — full of praise for Donald Trumpwhich we unearthed shortly after she was selected. Then came the discovery that, when she was brainstorming campaign slogans, “Hall’s Got Balls” was a serious contender (it could have been a winner). Later, Hall provided laughs when she lost her purse on the Tube (later returned) and said she had been pickpocketed. Thanks for the memories!

Liz who?

Can’t Liz Truss catch a break? Asked recently in an interview with GB News who her favourite Conservative leader is, apart from Margaret Thatcher or Winston Churchill, the 49-day PM fumbled for an answer and lighted on Javier Milei, the radical new president of Argentina. While it was perhaps odd to choose a politician on the other side of the world, libertarian Truss does share many of his free market ideas. Unfortunately, it turns out president Milei has no idea who Truss, is. Asked by the BBC over the weekend what he thinks about his new British fan, Milei looked puzzled and responded: “Quien?”
