New Nottingham micro pub wins top award from CAMRA

A micro pub in Sneinton has won top honours from Nottingham CAMRA after being crowned Cider Pub of the Year.

The Partizan Tavern has been open for less than a year in Manvers Street and was born out of owner Tony Perkins losing his job.

Former electrician Tony was made redundant in February 2020 just before the first pandemic lockdown.

With spare time on his hands, he put his energy into planning a micro pub, which opened just seven months ago.

The inspiration for the name comes from Serbian football team, Partizan Belgrade, which Tony has followed ever since the side played Notts County's youth team in 1990.

The tavern - one of nine shortlisted for the award - serves a variety of cask and craft beers, wine and cider but no spirits.

Members of the public were asked to nominate their favourite cider pubs, which were then visited by a team of CAMRA judges, who scored them against a range of criteria.

The tavern currently has three ciders and a perry in bibs (bag in box): Simon's Cider Short Stirling, Ruxton's 1617 dry cider, Udders Orchard Discovery and Hecks farmhouse perry.

Bottled cider from Sneinton Cider is currently on sale at the pub, which has a capacity of just 45.

The drinks change regularly as soon as they've sold out.

"It is an honour to win this award especially when you look at the competition," said Tony, who beat Hucknall micro pub The Beer Shack into second place.

He said he wouldn't have been able to win without the help and support of others, including Ray Blockley, the owner of Torkard Cider and a big mover in the cider industry.

Runner-up, The Beer Shack, in Debyshire Lane, serves locally-sourced ciders, including Hucknall-based Torkard Cider.

Castle Rock's Vat and Fiddle, a previous winner in 2019, was highly commended.
