New MRI unit and expansion announced for Ilkeston Community Hospital

A hospital has submitted plans for an extension to its outpatient area and a new MRI unit. The proposal has been put in for Ilkeston Community Hospital, and if approved, would allow the site to boost the range of diagnostic tests it can offer to patients.

The plans, put in on April 27 to Erewash Borough Council, propose an extension to the existing outpatients' department, housing an MRI unit and ancillary spaces, including a rooftop plant. The facility has had a mobile MRI scanner since March 2023, but the proposals would allow the hospital to provide the service on a permanent basis to patients.

Dr Ben Pearson, executive medical director for Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Ilkeston Community Hospital, said: “We are working with partners across Joined Up Care Derbyshire on the development of Community Diagnostic Centres. This will greatly boost the availability and range of diagnostic tests which patients can have at Ilkeston and other centres across Derbyshire.”

The proposed MRI unit would be an extension of the outpatient unit, adjacent to the existing car park at the front of the site, and would be 175 square metres across a single storey. The external plant deck including its access would account for approximately 50 square metres of roof-level space.

Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trist added that refurbishment works are also underway within the hospital to boost the availability of ultrasound and other tests such as echocardiography and ECG monitoring. Later in the year work will start to revamp the X-ray department to offer more tests, including CT scans.
