Michelin-Guide Glasgow restaurant to SHUT after five 'wonderful' years

One of Glasgow's most celebrated restaurants is set to close down this month. 

Julie's Kopitiam opened five years ago in the city's southside with renowned chef and former Masterchef quarter-finalist Julie Lin at its helm.

The small but mighty spot has since gone on to receive a staggering list of accolades thanks to its menu of authentic Malaysian dishes and just last week was featured in an episode of The Hairy Bikers Go Local.

The restaurant is also featured in the Michelin Guide, which recognises some of the best (but not quite Michelin-star level) eateries across the UK. 

In the Michelin description of the restaurant, it states: "The young owner has kept the décor simple and the focus firmly on the food at this traditional Malaysian coffee shop; she even visits Malaysia regularly to gather new ideas.

"Good value street food dishes are vibrant and flavoursome and service is sweet and cheerful. Watch the chefs in the open kitchen."

In a shock announcement this evening, Julie took to Instagram to share the news of the Kopitiam's imminent closure.

She said: "Hello everyone, we have some news. It’s the fondest of farewells.

"I opened the Kopitiam when I was 26 years old, I had a blast throwing myself in at the deep end.

"Over half a decade has passed and I am ready to explore my next steps in this exciting culinary world.

"So for many combined reasons it’s time to cool down the wok, and my only focus is on the positives of what the Kopitiam has brought to my life and many others.

"I’m closing our doors with a heavy heart, but I remain proud and excited for the future, please share with myself and the team, the positive reflections of the Kopitiam on 1109 Pollokshaws Road."

While the Shawlands eatery is set to close, Julie took the opportunity to remind customers of her hugely popular restaurant GaGa in Partick which will remain open.

She said: "I've opened another restaurant now called @gaga.glasgow and I can’t wait to cook for all of you in there.

"But for now, Shawlands, it’s a fond farewell. Like a good telly programme, we’re ending on a high.

"Thank you endlessly to everyone."
