Housing Development Alliance dedicates first low-income flood survivor home in Breathitt County

A group helping eastern Kentucky flood survivors get into new homes has dedicated their first low-income flood survivor home in Breathitt County. The Housing Development Alliance is based in Hazard and completed the home with funding from the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky’s Housing Can’t Wait Initiative.

Scott McReynolds is the executive director of the Housing Development Alliance. He said state and federal funding takes a long time, so this initiative helps.

“So, we were able with the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky and everybody who donated to that and FAHE to get started because housing can’t wait. We actually started building houses a few months after the flood and this is the twelfth house that we finished.”

He said this is helping them get a head start for when federal dollars arrive.

“The state and federal dollars are a little slow getting here sometimes and the big disaster recovery money from the federal government still isn’t quite available the state money, they’re in the process of releasing that now, so we’re excited about that.”

The home was built by the HDA Hope Building crew, which includes paid trainees who are all in substance use recovery.

The foundation for Appalachian Kentucky is a financial supporter of WEKU.
