GTA 6's highly anticipated release date narrowed to autumn 2025

GTA 6 has received a revised tentative release date that’s bound to test the patience of gamers.

After initially promising an ETA of 2025, the game’s publisher Take-Two Interactive has narrowed the window down to the Autumn of 2025. The tidbit was revealed as part of its quarterly financial report.

Why so coy? The firm probably doesn’t want to disappoint the public, or its investors, by announcing a concrete release date only to miss it. Rushing out an unfinished or broken game would also be catastrophic.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that the success of the company, and maybe even the entire video game industry (currently in the grip of mass layoffs) is riding on GTA 6.

Much to the dismay of gamers, the development process for would-be blockbusters on the scale of GTA 6 can easily run overtime. The entrepreneurial crime series is known for pushing the boundaries of free-roaming, open-world games with each new entry.

We’re also talking about the successor to one of the biggest games of all time, GTA V, which Take-Two says has now sold over 200 million copies.

Still, some were hoping to play the new game as soon as early next year, though that always felt a tad optimistic.

You can’t blame them for wanting it sooner rather than later. More than a decade has passed since GTA V’s release, meaning even the most disciplined of players are probably starting to crack. While they wait, fans have been sustaining themselves on GTA V’s versatile online mode. That game is still going like gangbusters, and was among the most downloaded titles on PlayStation in April.

The most ardent fans were also holding out for new GTA 6 teasers, fuelled by rumours of imminent new screenshots. Those still haven’t materialised, leaving gamers with very little to go on outside of the setting (a Floridian Vice City) and the protagonists (a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde).

If you need us, we’ll be watching the GTA 6 trailer for the millionth time.

Still, it could be worse: the game could have been delayed until 2026. Of course, that remains a very real possibility. If the worst does occur, the GTA fandom will be collectively quoting Rockstar’s favourite guitar hero Tom Petty by pleading ‘Don’t do me like that.’
