Glasgow museum staff to strike after plan to axe jobs revealed

Museum staff are set to strike after plans to axe 38 jobs were revealed.

Unison members in the Glasgow Museums and Collections team will take five days of strike action from Monday, October 23 as they hit back at Glasgow Life over cuts in jobs and services.

The union claims Glasgow Life, a Glasgow City Council arms-length organisation, is looking to cut 38 jobs, with the museums and collections section facing a 30% cut in posts.

Brian Smith, Unison Glasgow secretary, said: “Our members remain in a hugely difficult position, despite some changes to the job cuts proposal by Glasgow Life at the eleventh hour. But it was too little, too late.

"These workers are taking a stand to defend both themselves and the city’s world-class museums. They deserve support.

"Unison calls on Glasgow City Council’s political leaders to intervene and provide the funding required to resolve this dispute”.

A spokesperson for the union added: "Members are extremely concerned about the 30% cut to Collections Care and Access staff within Glasgow Life Museums and Collections.

"These cuts represent an immediate and acute risk to the security and safety of the City’s Museums, Archives and Special Collections.

"As Glasgow has the largest and finest civic collection in the UK, and one of the greatest civic collections in Europe, valued in excess of £1.4 billion, the cuts are both incredibly irresponsible and a high-profile accident waiting to happen.

"Glasgow risks following the example of the British Museum in terms of international reputational damage."

Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council have been contacted for comment.
