GCC Says Conditions Suitable to Hold Peace Talks in Yemen

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jassem Albudaiwi. (GCC)

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jassem Albudaiwi stressed on Tuesday that conditions are “suitable” to launch peace talks aimed at resolving the conflict in Yemen.

In a statement marking one year since the adoption of a nationwide ceasefire in the country, he called for prioritizing Yemen’s higher national interest so that peace, security and stability can prevail.

Peace must be based on the Gulf initiative, national dialogue outcomes and relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, he urged.

He also hailed the conclusions reached by Yemeni parties during those consultations hosted by the GCC from March 29 to April 7, 2022.

At the talks, Yemeni leaders, members of the House of Representatives and the Shura Council, and representatives of political forces and civil society reached important mechanisms to strengthen unity and build channels of communication, consultation and reconciliation, and to support the economic decision to ease the suffering of the Yemeni people and resume the process of development and construction.

Albudaiwi added that the GCC was confident that the Yemeni people will achieve the noble goals that the consultations were aimed at achieving.
