Former NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has expressed concerns over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to cease hostilities unless Ukraine becomes a member of the transatlantic military alliance. Rasmussen also highlighted the disparity in military aid between Europe and other nations, calling it embarrassing that Europe cannot match the level of support provided by countries like North Korea to Russia.
Rasmussen emphasized the importance of timely and substantial military aid to Ukraine, noting that the delay in American assistance and the failure of European nations to fulfill their pledges have hindered Ukraine's ability to counter Russian advances. He stressed that if Ukraine receives the necessary support, it can reverse the current situation and emerge victorious in the conflict.
According to Rasmussen, it is crucial for Ukraine to not only survive but also to win the war. He proposed enhancing Ukraine's air defense capabilities, drawing parallels to how Israel was supported in defending against threats from Iran. Rasmussen suggested establishing missile defenses on NATO territory near Ukraine's border to intercept Russian missiles and drones, thereby safeguarding civilians and protecting weapon deliveries to Ukraine.
The former NATO chief underscored the humanitarian imperative of protecting civilian populations and ensuring the security of Ukrainian defense industries.
