Firefighters tackling 'well alight' blaze in Glasgow as cops cordon off busy road

More than 40 firefighters are currently tackling a "well alight" blaze in Glasgow this evening.

Officers from Police Scotland and firefighters raced to Kilmarnock Road in the Shawlands area of the city after the alarm was raised shortly before 7pm on Tuesday, July 11.

At least nine fire engines have been pictured at the scene as well as a command support unit and numerous police vehicles.

Nearby businesses on Kilmarnock Road have been evacuated as a result with no reports of any casualties, according to the fire service.

An ambulance is also in attendance at the scene and officers have cordoned off the street.

Kilmarnock Road remained closed between Pollokshaws Road and Coustonholm Road at around 10pm.

The extent of the fire is currently unclear but one eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from a building on the street.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at around 6.59pm on Tuesday, July 11, to reports of a fire on Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands, Glasgow.

"We currently have nine appliances in attendance including specials. The fire is well alight."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Emergency services are in attendance due to a fire at a derelict building on Kilmarnock Road in Glasgow.

"Kilmarnock Road is closed between Pollokshaws Road and Coustonholm Road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes."
