Erik ten Hag insists 'brilliant' Manchester United 'deserved' to beat Chelsea in Premier League thriller

Erik ten Hag insists Manchester United “deserved to win” their chaotic Premier League encounter at Chelsea on Thursday evening.

The Red Devils were leading 3-2 in stoppage time at Stamford Bridge before Cole Palmer struck a penalty and then saw his shot deflected off Scott McTominay to spark jubilant scenes at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer was allowed space to shoot after a short corner from Enzo Fernandez as United sat back and it proved the latest winner ever recorded in Premier League history.

United had fought from two goals down after Conor Gallagher’s early strike and Palmer’s first penalty through goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes.

Much maligned winger Antony then played a contender for pass of the season for Garnacho’s second just after the hour mark before the sensational late turnaround.

Ten Hag’s side had improved following their draw at Brentford on Saturday evening but defeat leaves them nine points off Tottenham in fifth.

The Dutchman was scathing about his side’s lack of urgency in the dying embers but stressed he thought his team had done enough.

"Yes we started poor, kicking the ball away and defending poorly,” he told TNT Sports.

"But you saw we were dominating the game and it was brilliant how we played - we deserved to win the game.

"But, you cannot give it away like we did and we have to manage this game better.

"It is a team performance, you can point to one of the players but it's about a team performance.

"When it gets chaotic you have to deal with it as a team and we made the wrong decisions and we didn't help out as a team.

"Out of possession we made bad decision - a lack of concentration.

"Also, I think lucky at the end with the penalty situation, questionable and very soft but we have to do better."

United welcome arch rivals Liverpool on Sunday looking for a repeat of last month’s dramatic FA Cup classic in which they won 4-3.
