Edinburgh Leisure to close all facilities on Monday for state funeral of the Queen

Edinburgh Leisure has announced that all of their venues will be closed on Monday September 19 as a mark of respect for the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The organisation apologised for any inconvenience that this may cause to their users but added that they would be reopening the following day on Tuesday September 20.

The Queen’s state funeral is expected to take place at around 11am on Monday morning at Westminster Abbey.

It will be the first time that a monarch has had their funeral at the Abbey since the 18th century.

The Queen’s coffin will be transported from Westminster Hall to the Abbey on the morning of the funeral and it is understood that members of the Royal family will follow in procession behind the body.

A national bank holiday has been declared across the UK for the day of the funeral although this date was already designated a bank holiday in Scotland.

A post by Edinburgh Leisure on their social media stated: “All Edinburgh Leisure venues and services will be closed on Monday September 19 as a mark of respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We believe this is the right thing to do for our employees and customers.

“Please accept our apologies for the disruption to your planned activities and any inconvenience caused. Our venues will be reopening on Tuesday September 20.”

Several other businesses including major supermarket chains will also be closed on Monday 19.

Those wishing to keep up to date with the procession and funeral event will be able to do so on the Edinburgh Live website on Monday.
