President Joe Biden’s support for the Israeli military offensive in Gaza mixed with student anger over police crackdowns on anti-war campus protests are complicating the work of Democratic youth groups trying to engage classmates and other Generation Z voters ahead of this year’s election.

Hasan Pyarali, the president of the College Democrats chapter at Wake Forest University in North Carolina and the national group’s Muslim caucus chair, expressed challenges faced when discussing policy issues like electric vehicles and climate change in light of the Gaza conflict. President Biden condemned disorder in demonstrations and emphasized reports of antisemitic intimidation on campuses, maintaining his stance on the conflict.

The monthslong bombardment of Gaza by Israel in response to Hamas’ attacks has raised concerns among young Americans, with many exposed to the situation through social media. The College Democrats of America criticized the White House’s approach to the conflict, highlighting the need for freedom for Palestinians and opposing genocidal acts.

While polls show young Americans supporting a ceasefire in Gaza and sympathizing with Palestinians, only a minority closely follow news about the conflict. The handling of the Israel-Hamas war by Biden has received mixed approval among young voters.

Despite the complexities of the Gaza conflict, young voters are primarily concerned with economic issues, housing, and climate change. Democratic groups are working to engage young voters, with some expressing frustration over the lack of communication from the Biden administration.

As the election approaches, Democratic organizations are navigating divisions over Biden’s Israel policy, with some emphasizing the importance of policy issues like cost of living and climate change. The College Democrats face internal disagreements over statements regarding the conflict, reflecting broader challenges within the Democratic Party.

Efforts to mobilize young voters are ongoing, with groups like the College Democrats of America committed to supporting Biden’s reelection. However, concerns persist over the disconnect between youth organizations and the Biden campaign, particularly in critical swing states like Wisconsin.
