Major automakers like General Motors, Ford, and Volkswagen are investing in bidirectional charging technology, with GM aiming to make all its EVs bidirectional by 2026. While bidirectional charging has been mostly theoretical until now, it is expected to become a standard feature in EVs over the next few years.

With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events like wildfires and power outages, the need for resilient energy solutions is more critical than ever. Bidirectional charging systems offer a way to utilize electric vehicle batteries as a valuable asset for storing and supplying electricity during emergencies.

Research indicates that the global bidirectional EV charger market is projected to grow significantly, reaching $4,820.6 million by 2031. By 2030, it is estimated that there will be around 28 million electric vehicles on U.S. roads, collectively storing more electricity than traditional power plants.

While bidirectional charging technology is currently focused on enabling vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-building energy transfer, there is potential for future expansion into larger-scale vehicle-to-grid platforms. This evolution could transform electric vehicles into a substantial distributed energy resource, contributing to grid stability and efficiency.

As the world transitions towards decarbonization and increased adoption of EVs, bidirectional charging technology is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing energy resilience and reducing strain on the power grid. Initiatives like the vehicle-to-building project in Boulder, Colorado, demonstrate the practical applications of bidirectional charging in optimizing energy usage and cost savings for communities.
