Biden campaigns in South Carolina, focuses on black voters

President Biden is heading to South Carolina for his first primary contest.

President Joe Biden is set to visit South Carolina, where he will be on the ballot for the first time this primary season, just one week from today. This visit comes as his campaign faces a lack of enthusiasm from a key voting bloc in the state.

President Biden made the strategic decision to skip Iowa and New Hampshire, opting for South Carolina as his first contest this cycle. The president wanted to avoid the caucus format of Iowa and instead wanted a state that better represents diversity to kick off his campaign.

During his visit, President Biden will be addressing the Democratic Party of South Carolina during a dinner event. He plans to speak about the promises he has kept to black voters over the past three years of his presidency. Additionally, he will focus on the perceived threat posed by former President Donald Trump.

On the Republican side, there remains an ongoing race between Trump and Nikki Haley. Some within Haley's camp see South Carolina as a potential last stand. However, President Biden is primarily focused on Trump and the upcoming general election, rather than the specific Democratic challengers, such as Dean Phillips.

Though the Biden campaign sees strong support and favorable odds in South Carolina, they are not taking any chances and making strategic moves. California Governor Gavin Newsom has arrived in the state to act as a valuable surrogate for President Biden's campaign. Newsom has been emphasizing that gaming the system by voting in the open primary, where Joe Biden is the uncontested candidate, or switching to the Republican side to vote for Haley over Trump, is not an effective strategy.

First Lady Jill Biden also made an appearance in South Carolina, thanking the state for its crucial support during the 2020 election. She highlighted the pivotal role played by James Clyburn in securing her husband's victory in the state.

As the South Carolina primary draws near, it's worth noting that time seems to have flown by, with just one week left until the crucial voting day arrives. Both the Biden campaign and its supporters are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this primary, hoping for a strong showing and solidifying the president's status as the frontrunner in the Democratic race.

With President Biden's visit imminent, all eyes are on South Carolina as the state prepares for an eventful primary season.
