Amazon Prime Video Developing 'Legally Blonde' TV Series With Reese Witherspoon

New York Amazon facility

A TV series set in the world of 'Legally Blonde' is currently in development at Amazon Prime Video. The project is being executive produced by Reese Witherspoon, Josh Schwartz, and Stephanie Savage, with Schwartz and Savage also handling the writing duties. Witherspoon, who starred in two of the 'Legally Blonde' films, will executive produce under her Hello Sunshine banner alongside Lauren Neustadter. The production companies involved include Hello Sunshine, part of Candle Media, and Fake Empire. Marc Platt, a producer on the original films, is also on board as an executive producer.

The series is part of Amazon's efforts to develop new projects based on intellectual property acquired through their recent acquisition of MGM in 2022. 'Legally Blonde' joins other projects like 'Barbershop' and 'Robocop' in this initiative. The first 'Legally Blonde' film was released in 2001, featuring Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a fashion-focused sorority girl who enrolls in Harvard Law School to win back her boyfriend. The movie was a commercial success, grossing over $140 million worldwide. The sequel, 'Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde,' followed in 2003, with a third installment released direct-to-video in 2009.

Aside from the films, a stage musical adaptation of the original 'Legally Blonde' premiered on Broadway in 2007, garnering multiple Tony and Drama Desk nominations. Schwartz and Savage, known for their work on 'Gossip Girl' and 'The OC,' are leading the development of the TV series. The duo has also worked on projects like the recent 'Gossip Girl' reboot and shows such as 'City on Fire' and 'Nancy Drew.'

Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine are represented by CAA and LBI Entertainment, while Schwartz and Savage are repped by WME. Amazon MGM Studios will handle the production of the upcoming 'Legally Blonde' series, although specific plot details have not yet been revealed. The announcement of this new project has generated excitement among fans of the original films and those eager to see how the beloved franchise will be reimagined for the small screen.
