Air ambulance lands on South Shields street after woman suffers head injuries

Emergency services descended on a South Shields road after a woman sustained head injuries.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Dean Road this morning following reports of concern for the welfare of a woman. The air ambulance helicopter was also called to the scene and the road was closed to allow the aircraft to land.

Doctors and paramedics assessed the woman at around 8.30am before returning to base and the road remained closed from West Park Road to the B1301, Beaufront Terrace. The road has since reopened and the woman has been taken to hospital.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just after 7.30am today (Wednesday), we received a report of concern for the welfare of a woman who had sustained head injuries on Dean Road, South Shields.

“Emergency services attended, and the road was closed temporarily for colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) to attend to take the woman to hospital. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

“Enquires to establish the cause of the injuries are ongoing and the road fully re-opened just after 9am.”

The Great North Air Ambulance Service sent two doctors and a paramedic to the scene and worked alongside colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to assess and treat the woman before returning back to base.

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call at 7.56am this morning (Wednesday 12 July) to reports of a person unwell on Dean Road, South Shields. We dispatched an ambulance crew who took one patient to hospital for further treatment."
